The following policies and fee schedule were adopted by the Mayor and Council of the City of Wahoo on June 25th, 2024, 
 
    • On March 1-March 10 and October 1-October 10, City staff will clean sweep the cemeteries. Any decorations or ornaments will be discarded. Items that follow the guidelines listed below may be picked up by family or designated representation in advance and replaced after cleanup.  
    • New graves may be decorated with floral sprays and arrangements immediately following internment.  The City will remove the decorations one week following internment.  
    • Flowers and plants, real or artificial, must be in permanent containers. Temporary containers are not allowed at any time.   
      • Permanent containers of metal or stone composition must be built into the foundation or part of the monument.  
      • After-market permanent containers may be affixed to the monument by a monument company with the expressed approval of the Cemetery Sexton.   
      • Flowers that are withered, faded, or unsightly will be removed.  
      • No items may be pushed into the ground.  
      • No plantings shall be permitted on graves.  
      • No dogs are permitted in any City Cemetery at any time.   
      • If an item is not specifically listed as allowed it is not permitted within City cemeteries. These items will be disposed of when discovered.   
      • Holiday Decorations:  
        • Memorial Day:  
          • Additional grave decorations will be permitted one week before and one week after these holidays.  
        • Christmas:   
          • Additional grave decorations will be allowed from Thanksgiving through January 2nd.   
        • Additional grave decorations include potted plants, wreaths/wreath stands, and flags.  
        • Placement of any decorations should not interfere with regular scheduled maintenance activities (mowings, weed trimming, etc.)  
    • Items not collected within the timeframes detailed above will be discarded.  
    • The City shall not be responsible for lost or stolen items in the cemeteries.  
    • Legacy concrete vases that were once sold by the city or installed by others such as the Wahoo Greenhouse are grandfathered in and will be removed when it is evident that they have not been utilized for at least 3 years or are broken and unusable.   

 

Examples of items that are NOT allowed:  figurines, statutes, knick-knacks placed on the edges of the headstones, solar lights, Shepard’s hooks, Stand-alone vases, glass of any kind, wind chimes, benches (unless built into the monument), crosses placed in the ground, flags of any kind unless placed in the flag holder built into the monument foundation, flower arrangements (on a wire) stuck in the ground. Please note this is not an all-inclusive list.

 

 

  1. Grave Spaces  

Occupancy of a grave space shall be limited as follows:   

One regular deep vault burial and one cremation or cremation urn.   

Two cremations or cremation urns  

Spaces in Babyland are sold sequentially, only sized for one small child burial.  

No ground surface vaults shall be allowed for new internments.     

  

  1. Grave Opening and Closing  

All grave openings and closings will be done by City staff.  

Grave openings need to be scheduled two full business days in advance.                Scheduling of an opening can only be done M-F before 3:00pm. No openings will be scheduled on weekends and holidays. 

Grave closings happen immediately after family members have left the cemeteries. Closings are available 8:00am-3:00pm Monday- Friday. Saturday 8:00am-Noon is available for an additional cost. No closings will be done on Sundays or on Holidays. Funeral homes are responsible for ensuring that closings are scheduled within the allowed times.  In the event that the family remains at the burial site beyond these times there will be an additional fee associated with that closing.  

All fees are due at the time of scheduling.  

  

  1. Disinterment  

City Staff will disinter a grave upon request. The request must come from a mortuary and permission must be granted from the State of Nebraska. The City requires documentation of State approval. Disinterment will only be done Monday- Friday 8:00am-2:00pm and moving a vault must be done by a vault company.   

Fees listed include re-burial in existing location. Movement from one site to another within City cemeteries will mean incurring both disinterment costs and opening and closing costs at the new location.   

  

  1. Foundations  

The City shall set all foundations for cemetery markers for monument companies.  

Foundations with footings are poured to ensure stability and longevity. All foundations will include a minimum of a 4” wash on all sides. For double monument foundations, an 8” separation between the monuments will be used unless otherwise specified.  

All foundations must be in line with existing monuments.  

Once monuments are set to foundation, the city is not responsible for settling, cracking or breakage of foundation.  

  

  1. Markers  

Only one above ground marker is permitted per grave site. The maximum height for personal or private cemetery markers in K of H Cemetery (Sunrise Cemetery) and Sunrise North Cemetery shall be three feet including foundation.  

All markers in Babyland located in K of H Cemetery (Sunrise Cemetery) shall be flush with ground level and shall not be larger than 8” X 16”.   

Temporary markers shall only be permitted for one year after the date of burial.  

Organizational, commemorative markers, and permanent flag holders must be set as part of the foundation.
